You can travel around the word and meet all kinds of people. If you truly want to engage with the locals influencing the culture of any city or town, go to the coffee shop. Coffee shops are breeding grounds for communities. People go there to do work, catch up, or even to spend some alone time. No matter what their intentions are, the majority of the people that are most actively involved in any community will attend coffee shops regularly.
That being said, I want stress the importance of the baristas and customers responsibility to foster a communicative community together.
Don't be afraid to ask the people next to you how they're doing. Ask their name, where they're from, what they do. It doesn't matter, as long as you are open to being vulnerable you will most likely have an experience that will influence you in a positive way.
Who knows, you may make a new lifetime friend or just get to know someone for that moment in time. Its all up to you and how you embrace the community around you.
